Product Statement

PDF: How To + Examples

How to write a product statement

  1. Try to answer the what, who, and how in a single statement.
    • Who this target user is.
    • What user needs the product redesign will address (calling out the top priority goals).
    • How the product redesign will address these needs and possibly how the product redesign measures up to competition.
  2. You can also try to start with one of these standard templates and then simplify it:
    • Template 1:
      • “For [target customer] who [statement of need or opportunity] the improved [product name] is a [product category] that [key benefit, reason to buy].”
      • You can also add the following differentiation aspect to the statement if you choose:
        • “Unlike [primary competitive alternative] our product redesign [statement of primary differentiation].”
    • Template 2:
      • The improved [product  name] is the [market category] for [target user group] who need [user need] by [distinct benefit].

How to Turn In:

  1. One written product statement posted to the #project1 Slack Channel. Also turn into your Google Drive to keep track of it.
  2. 2 Peer Reviews of other teams’ product statements. Leave them feedback on Slack on how to improve the statement. Ask yourself if you understand what they are trying to do, for whom, and how they are going to do it, but all in a succinct manner.
