Prepare Personas

  • Understand product’s users with research and statistics.
  • Condense research into patterns and themes.
  • Organize findings into persona groups that represent your primary users.
  • Distill those groups into characters/archetypes that embody your findings. Separate them into primary and secondary users.
  • Develop background, motivations, and expectations for each.
  • Avoid stereotyping and bias by basing your personas off of your interviews and online market research. 
  • Make these composites of multiple users, don’t base one persona directly off of one real person.

Inclusive Design

  • Address your own biases.
  • Address who your product excludes and how it excludes them.
  • Consider the Persona Spectrum (physical, cognitive, emotional, or societal) and (permanent, temporary, situational)
    • solve for one, extend to many – focus on what is universally important to all humans.
